Sometimes it feels like spring won’t come soon enough. In Canada at least, it’s something we wait for for a long time.
But why wait for spring when you can grow fresh greens in your kitchen right now! Sprouts are easy and cheap to grow and they have tons of health benefits. They’ve even been known to protect your body from degenerative effects of aging (find a list of health benefits on the Mumm’s sprouting seeds website). Plus, they’re super quick to grow. Just a couple minutes a day is all it takes.
Here’s how.
What you’ll need
-
Seeds
-
A jar (wide rim jars are best)
-
A piece of cheese cloth
-
A rubber band
-
A bowl or something that allows you to tilt the jar upside down
Mumm’s sprouting seeds are most popular. You can find them in most health food stores. Mumm’s has all different kinds including alfalfa, broccoli, mung bean and chickpea sprouts. They’re all equally delicious and easy to grow. Some seeds take longer to grow than others but they all take less than a week.
What to do
-
Put 2 tbsp of seeds in the jar.
-
Pour 2 cups of water over the seeds and let them soak. The seed package should specify how long to soak for. You can also find this on the Mumm’s website. Soaking time varies from 2 – 12 hours depending on the type of seed.
-
Put the cheese cloth over the mouth of the jar and attach it with the rubber band.
-
After soaking, rinse the seeds and leave the jar upside down on a slight angle (putting the jar upside inside a large bowl works well).
-
Fill and drain the jar 2 or 3 times each day with cool water until your sprouts are ready. Make sure to leave the jar upside down after each time so the excess water drains.
Great post and great idea!
